William is the son of Maxine and the late Ernest Vetter of Charles City. William grew up south of Charles City on the family farm and has two siblings; Barb Dotson and Jerry Vetter both of Charles City. Williams’ wife Tami is the daughter of the late Bill and Patricia Ellis formally of Floyd. William has one son Garrett Vetter who is currently a Captain in the United States Marine Corps currently stationed at Virginia Beach, VA.
William Vetter attributes a great deal of his personal code of ethics not only to his parents, but to his twenty-six years in the United States Marine Corps. He joined the Corps immediately after graduating early from Charles City High School in 1980, and served in two combat tours (Desert Storm and Beirut, Lebanon), achieving the rank of Sergeant Major in 2002 and retiring in February 2006 before returning to Charles City in pursuit of a law enforcement career. Starting as a county-wide dispatcher and a reserve officer with the Charles City Police Department in 2006, Vetter was hired as a full-time police officer in 2006 and in 2007 was selected as the Community Oriented Police Officer, the position he currently holds.
In addition to campaigning for sheriff and working as a police officer, Vetter also contributes his personal time to the local groups: FOCUS (Free Our Children of Unhealthy Substances), Floyd County Veterans Affairs (current chair), Families Making a Difference (serving Floyd, Mitchell & Chickasaw Counties), and Floyd County Child Prevention Council (current chair). He is also a life member of two local service organizations: the VFW and Marine Corps League. William is member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. His wife Tami is an entrepreneur with two businesses in Charles City, The Rustic Corner, and Working Women, Inc.
